Former MVP and one of the most athletic quarterbacks ever, is attempting a comeback to the NFL. Cam Newton recently posted a few videos on social media and confidently announced that there aren’t 32 quarterbacks in the league that are better than he is. Newton appeared at Auburn’s pro day to work out, and there were a few important things to note from the outing.
Newton had reportedly thrown around 30 passes throughout the afternoon and was tossing to his brother Caylin. Caylin was a former quarterback at Howard University before finishing his football career at Auburn while playing the wide receiver position. Cam opted not to speak after the workout, but his brother told everybody he still had it. Caylin said, “He doesn’t owe anybody anything. He has had an amazing journey and an amazing career in the NFL. He has nothing to prove to anybody. He came to show his ability, show he still has it. I think, for him, this was a selfless act. But it was also to show and prove to everybody he’s not sitting around. He’s still got it. Whatever organisation wants to get a winning quarterback, his number’s still open and available.”
It indeed appeared to be more than just a selfless act, though. Cam said in a Twitter video, “Tell me how these randoms keep getting jobs? Don’t worry about it. I’m gonna show you. I can’t wait to show you.”
Cam’s workout was then played out in front of multiple NFL scouts. He threw a few good balls, including a scrambling deep shot to his brother down the field. While he impressed enough to intrigue teams, there’s too much baggage that might come with adding him to their roster.
Teams know he’s 33 years old and has relied upon his mobility throughout his career. They also know that adding Newton would mean they must reshape their offense to fit his mobility and playstyle. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be helping them win games. On top of that, it seems like Newton needs to prepare to accept a backup role too. If he wants to avoid sitting back and helping mentor somebody and be ready in case of an injury, then his addition will only distract the team and the starting quarterback.
The last time we saw Newton play football was Week 18 of the 2021 season, though his previous start in the league was two weeks before that. He had some uneventful stints with the New England Patriots and then a brief return to the Carolina Panthers, where he suffered some injuries that held him back. The discussions about adding Newton will be for other NFL teams in the upcoming weeks.
Still, current circumstances might be holding him back from inking another deal to return to the NFL and prove to everybody that he is still good enough to be a starting quarterback.
