Who would have thought that both Dalvin Cook and DeAndre Hopkins would be free agents at this point in their careers? If you had told me that just last season, I would have thought you were crazy. Yet, that is the reality we are living in right now. And it seems like they could be looking to make waves together somewhere.
Dalvin Cook spoke with Adam Schefter this week and had this to say regarding both he and Hopkins remaining free agents. “If we end up on the same roster, that would be something epic for the NFL. When I been with D-Hop, we done chill together. I want to go win. Like I said, the money gonna come and that’s going to happen. But like as far as going to life that trophy up, he got that same mindset as me.” Dalvin and Hopkins both haven’t ever reached the Super Bowl, but both want to change that with an opportunity to join some new team available.
Unfortunately, the rumours have pointed these two teams in separate directions despite those comments. Hopkins openly stated that he wanted to join a contender, then met with the Tennessee Titans. Tennessee offered a contract to him as well. D-Hop then travelled to New England and received a contract offer from the Patriots. Those are the only two teams he’s met with at this point. Meanwhile, Dalvin Cook hasn’t gone anywhere just yet. The team that he’s been consistently linked to is the Miami Dolphins, and even the Denver Broncos.
The tough part is that these two would have difficulty fitting together on the same roster. In Tennessee, they have Derrick Henry. Hopkins would start, but Cook wouldn’t. In New England, they have Rhamondre Stevenson same situation. Then the other way around, Miami has Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, so Hopkins could be the third wideout on the roster while Cook could be the starter. In Denver, Hopkins could jump to number one but has competition in Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton, while Cook must battle with Javonte Williams. All in all, it’s hard to see them partnering up on one of the rumoured teams that we’ve mentioned already.
Other notable options would be the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills, strictly for the opportunity to win a Super Bowl. They could each get significant playing time on either of those teams. The problem is cap space, and signing both guys likely isn’t in the cards with their available room. The bottom line is that these two can still play and help bring a championship somewhere. If they find a place to link up together, that offense would drastically improve. However, the odds of that happening in the current landscape of the NFL is unlikely. Then again, we’ve seen some insane things happen over the past couple of years that make situations like these possible all over again.
