The Buffalo Bills, along with the rest of the NFL, have just begun their mandatory offseason minicamps. Unfortunately for Buffalo, superstar wide receiver Stefon Diggs didn’t show up. What’s worse is that nobody knows why he didn’t show up.
Reporters were throwing a ton of questions as head coach Sean McDermott over his absence, and he had a troubling response. McDermott said that he is “very concerned” over his wideout not being in attendance. He also went on to say, “I’m not gonna get into, look, I respect everyone’s questions and what they want to know about our team. Right now, I’m just not gonna get into that anymore.”
What’s interesting is that Diggs was at their voluntary minicamp in the facility just a few days ago. However, he left before their practice officially began. Diggs’ agent said that they are confused why McDermott said that he was concerned and that there are things “being worked out” behind the scenes with them. Still though, he didn’t show up to aa mandatory practice and the coaching staff and players were clearly not informed as to what that absence was for.
One thing is for sure though, it isn’t about money. He is entering just the second year of his near $100 million dollar extension that he signed last offseason. He’s locked into the Bills franchise until at least 2027, so he has absolutely zero leverage now or an excuse if this continues.
Many reporters have claimed that this is simply an in-house situation that’s being resolved as we speak. Nobody knows what happened or when, but that it was an unspecified problem in the team that is being worked out. It seems like the only big problem staring us in the face is Diggs’ outburst when the team was knocked out early in the playoffs again. His frustration was visible not only on the sideline, but after the game and on social media as well. That anger led to this quote, “It doesn’t make sense. I’ll rack my brain with this sh*t at this point.”
Even with all of this, superstar quarterback Josh Allen has his back. Allen said, “Internally, we’re working on some things, not football related. But Stef, he’s my guy. I f*cking love him. We wish he was in here today and was out there on the field with us, but that’s not the case. I’ve got his back no matter what, I’ve got no doubts we will figure out what’s going on.” Allen will need his top wideout if the Bills want to compete for a Super Bowl again next year. Diggs was the far and away wide receiver one in this offense not just last year, but ever since he joined Buffalo. Gabe Davis is a decent number two, though the gap between him and Diggs is massive. The team needs Diggs, and luckily, they don’t have to pay him or alter his contract. It’s all about solving whatever issues seem to be plaguing him at the moment internally.
