Who’s heading to Germany for EURO 2024?

GROUP A

Group A went into this set of fixtures with their qualification spots already taken up by Spain and Scotland. Spain played two games over the break, winning both 3-1, these were against Cyprus and Georgia. Although for the Spaniards they’ve left the break feeling worse than it began, despite their two wins, after young midfielder Gavi suffered an ACL injury in Spain’s victory over Georgia. Barcelona are furious that Gavi was risked in a meaningless game, he may potentially be out for the entire season, plus miss the Euros itself. Aside from Spain, Scotland drew both their games versus Georgia and Norway, and despite finishing below Norway, Georgia have confirmed their place in the play-offs.

GROUP B

France were the only team confirmed to be heading to Germany ahead of the international break, this didn’t stop them fielding a full strength team and hammering minnows Gibraltar 14-0. Yes you did read that correctly. Ronald Koeman’s Netherland side defeated the Republic of Ireland 1-0 to secure their place at EURO 2024. It seems this may potentially be the end of the road for Ireland coach Stephen Kenny. When asked by RTÉ if “the way this last campaign has gone, that that will be the end of your tenure” he answered “I really don’t know…I don’t control that. It’s quite possible”. Ireland’s loss also confirmed Greece’s place in the play-offs. There’s games still to play in this group, but nothing to play for.

GROUP C

Despite England playing twice, with Gareth Southgate’s side already qualified for the tournament the focus was on Italy and Ukraine. Italy put five past North Macedonia on Friday night in a 5-2 win. This result sadly spoiled any chance of qualification for North Macedonia. Federico Chiesa found the back of the net twice to give the Italians confidence heading into their game versus Ukraine on Monday night. This game was crucial. Ukraine had to win to qualify through second place. After ninety minutes it was all square, 0-0, sending reigning champions Italy through to EURO 2024.

GROUP D

With Turkey confirmed at the tournament, the focus in this group is on Wales and Croatia as they are the two vying for the final qualification spot. Wales’ draw against Armenia and Croatia’s victory over Latvia means it’s in Croatia’s hands. If Croatia win tonight versus Armenia then they qualify, leaving Wales to hope for a play-off spot to make it to Germany 2024.

GROUP E

This group has probably been the closest in terms of the amount of teams challenging for the top two places. It finished with Albania and Czech Republic qualifying, Poland heading to the play-offs, while Moldova and the Faroe Islands headed home. The Czech Republic confirmed their qualification on Monday night with a 3-0 victory over a 10-man Moldova.

GROUP F

Belgium and Austria had already confirmed their places at EURO 2024 heading into this round’s fixtures. It also wasn’t possible for any of the other teams in the group to reach the play-offs so the games were essentially friendlies. Well, someone should’ve let Romelu Lukaku know that was the case anyway. After scoring his first goal in the seventeenth minute he hit the back of the net another three times to make it four goals in twenty minutes for the Belgian, not so friendly it would seem!

GROUP G

Both Hungary and Serbia confirmed their place at the EURO’s after Hungary’s results this week. Their draw vs Bulgaria meant Hungary had qualified, however it was their win over Montenegro which cemented Serbia’s spot as fellow qualifiers as they ensured the Serbs sat above Montenegro in the table. Dominik Szoboszlai was to thank after scoring two in two minutes to turn the game from 1-0 to 2-1 to Hungary, the game finished 3-1 after a late goal from Ádám Nagy.

GROUP H

Denmark confirmed their spot at EURO 2024 after a win over Slovenia, despite missing their topscorer Rasmus Højlund. The two fighting it out for the other spot was Slovenia and Kazakhstan who faced each other last night, Slovenia coming out on top as 2-1 winners. Meanwhile, the team bottom of the table, and FIFA rankings, scored for the third consecutive game. Fair play to San Marino.

GROUP I

With a game left to play each it is already decided in Group I. Romania qualified after defeating Israel in Hungary while Switzerland reached the tournament in Germany after a 1-1 draw with Kosovo meant they were uncatchable. Israel have confirmed their spot in the play-offs despite losing twice in the last week and the troubles at home meaning they couldn’t play their home game there.

GROUP J

Portugal had already confirmed their place at EURO 2024 before this week of internationals, they’ve now completed their qualifiers with a 100% record after their 2-0 win over Iceland. Iceland also suffered defeat at the hands of Slovakia on Thursday night, a 4-2 win for Slovakia meant they confirmed their spot at the EURO’s along with Portugal. In this group both Luxembourg and Bosnia and Herzegovina have confirmed their places in the play-offs.
