LA LIGA (Spain)
We begin in Spain where on Saturday Real Madrid travelled to Seville, and left with a single point after a 1-1 draw. A tense match with seven yellow cards and anger from Madrid players, due to Sevilla fans behaviour, made the game an eventful affair. A header in the last fifteen from Dani Carvajal secured the draw for Los Blancos, and it could’ve been more if either of Madrid’s disallowed goals had counted.
Following on Girona beat Almeria 5-2, with a double from Artem Dovbyk and an excellent performance from Aleix García helping Girona to their 8th win of the season, taking them joint top with Madrid. In Catalonia Athletic Bilbao faced Xavi’s unbeaten side on Sunday evening. Barcelona came out victorious with a 1-0 win. The two sides were level up until the seventy-ninth minute when substitute Marc Guiu scored thirty-three seconds into his Barca debut. This was the winner. What a night for the seventeen year old!
LIGUE 1 (France)
Our next stop is France. Where we saw PSG claim another 3 points versus Strasbourg. A 3-0 win, and a goal for Kylian Mbappé should give the team confidence ahead of their UCL fixture vs AC Milan. Two teams sit above Luis Enrique’s side, Nice and AS Monaco. Nice continued their unbeaten campaign this weekend while AS Monaco beat Metz 2-1 to stay top of the pile, thanks to a double from Aleksandr Golovin.
Down at the bottom of the table are Lyon, after losing to Clermont who were previously in their place. Nine games in with only three points and still no win… it’s looking dangerously bad for Lyon. With Clermont having a game in hand on them, Lyon could be five points adrift from second bottom if Clermont win that. Something needs to change at Lyon, and fast!
BUNDESLIGA (Germany)
The Bundesliga has offered us entertainment every gameweek this season, and it didn’t stop this weekend! We begin with Stuttgart picking up their eighth win in a row with a 3-0 victory over Union Berlin. However, an injury to Serhou Guirassy put a damper on the victory. The Bundesliga top scorer, who got another this week before his injury, is expected to be out for a couple of weeks. Stuttgart will be hoping they can continue their form without him.
Elsewhere, Leverkusen won again with a 2-1 victory over Wolfsburg. Xabi Alonso’s side remain unbeaten and top of the league, a point ahead of Stuttgart. It looks like the title race will be a close one again this year in Germany! At the other end of the table Köln got their first victory of the season with a 3-1 win over Borussia Monchengladbach, two goals from Florian Kainz helped them overcome the visitors. Köln currently sit in the Bundesliga relegation / Bundesliga 2 promotion playoff place, they’ll hope to escape this soon!
SERIE A (Italy)
Over in Italy two relegation zone sides faced one another on Sunday. They were Salernitana and Cagliari, the game finished 2-2. We had to wait until the seventy-ninth minute to see a goal, but once the first one came they all did. Cagliari went ahead twice but both times Salernitana came back to equalise through goals from Boulaye Dia, one a penalty in the ninety-fifth minute! The result means both sides remain in the relegation zone.
One of the most anticipated games of the season in Italy was this weekend, AC Milan versus Juventus. Massimiliano Allegri’s side were triumphant at the San Siro, thanks to a goal from Manuel Locatelli. The Turin side were 1-0 winners in a tight game, which Juventus had the advantage in after Milan’s Malick Thiaw saw red. On Monday night Fiorentina faced Empoli, everyone expected a win for Fiorentina going into the game vs a team in the bottom three. However what transpired was a shock 2-0 win for Empoli thanks to goals from Francesco Caputo and Emmanuel Gyasi. This took Empoli out of the bottom three and meant Fiorentina fell out of the top four after Napoli’s win over the weekend.
ELSEWHERE
It feels as if we’re talking about Ajax every week at the moment, but with another loss it’s hard to ignore them. This time it’s a 4-3 defeat to Utrecht to put Ajax 17th in the table, only one point above bottom spot. It could well get worse next week when they face PSV who sit top of the Eredivisie, twenty two points above Ajax. PSV aren’t just top, they’re yet to drop points and are in great form.
Royale Union Saint-Gilloise lead the table in Belgium. Collecting another three points from their 4-1 win over Eupen. While Anderlecht dropped points to Standard Liege in a 3-2 loss, despite leading 2-0 after the first 25 minutes, meaning USG went top of the table by four points.
Finally to Scotland, where Celtic grabbed another win, this time 4-1 against Hearts. Meaning that they kept their seven point lead over Rangers in the Premiership. Nine games in and Brendan Rodgers side remain unbeaten, looking to retain their title.
