With the majority of the EURO 2024 qualifiers having already taken place during this international break, let’s take a look at what’s been happening, what could still happen and who’s qualified over the last few days!
GROUP A
Qualified: Spain and Scotland
Heading into the break Scotland were leading Group A, while also remaining unbeaten. This changed when they faced Spain on Thursday night and were defeated 2-0. Many Scotland fans felt aggrieved after this game as Scott McTominay had a goal ruled out for offside which would’ve put Scotland into the lead, before Alvaro Morata scored to put Spain ahead instead. Although, the disdain towards the Spaniards didn’t last long, as when Spain triumphed over Norway on Sunday night this ensured both Spain and Scotland qualified for EURO 2024.
GROUP B
Qualified: France
Two times winner’s France unsurprisingly also booked their place at next year’s tournament after victory in the Netherlands courtesy of two Kylian Mbappe goals. The contest for second place is between the Netherlands and Greece, who faced each other last night. The Netherlands came out 1-0 winners thanks to a ninety third minute goal from none other than Virgil van Dijk. This means both teams sit on twelve points, although the Netherlands have played one game less than Greece, making them favourites to go through at this current point.
GROUP C
Qualified: N/A
With the top two facing off tonight there’s a chance Group C will have a qualifier too, that is if England manage to defeat Italy. In terms of what’s already happened, Italy collected an expected three points versus Malta on Saturday, while Ukraine won at home to North Macedonia. This means Ukraine could potentially be second in the group by the end of the week if Italy lose to England and Ukraine defeat Malta. Creating what would be an interesting match up when these two face one another in November!
GROUP D
Qualified: Turkey
Group D saw Turkey confirm their spot at EURO 2024 after a 4-0 victory over Latvia thanks to a double from former Everton man Cenk Tosun, and a strong display all over the pitch from the Turks. Elsewhere, a Harry Wilson double helped Wales see off Croatia who now are competing against each other for that final qualifying spot in the group, Croatia currently with the superior goal difference.
GROUP E
Qualified: N/A
Over in Group E the only team out of contention to qualify is the Faroe Islands. There are only four points between the other four teams, with two games to play for most (one for Poland). Many at the start of the qualifiers would’ve expected Poland and Czech Republic to be the teams to qualify for the tournament in Germany, however after wins against both sides in their last two games Albania lead the group. Could Albania make their second European Championship appearance?
GROUP F
Qualified: Belgium and Austria
On Friday night Belgium came out triumphant over Austria in a 3-2 win, to qualify for next year’s tournament. The Belgian’s were 3-0 up but came close to squandering their qualification confirmation as they conceded two in the last twenty minutes and had a man sent off! On Monday night a 1-0 win for Austria over Azerbaijan was enough to gain qualification, deserved after their group stage performance. Sadly the game between Belgium and Sweden had to be abandoned at half time due to a terrorist attack not far from the stadium where that game was taking place, we send condolences to all affected by the shooting in Brussels.
GROUP G
Qualified: N/A
The big game in this group came when Hungary faced Serbia, the two level on points going into the game with it all to play for. The home side came out on top with a 2-1 win thanks to goals from Roland Sallai and Barnabás Varga. This means that Hungary will qualify if they win vs Lithuania tonight and Serbia are defeated by Montenegro. Although, It’s likely both Hungary and Serbia will qualify in the end.
GROUP H
Qualified: N/A
No team is yet to qualify from Group H although Denmark and Slovenia are favourites to take the qualification spots currently, after wins for both sides on Saturday night. They both could go six points clear if they win on Tuesday and Finland vs Kazakhstan ends in a draw between the two sides. Although they still have to face one another which could open up an opportunity for whoever is third at that point in time.
GROUP I
Qualified N/A
Romania and Switzerland lead Group I and are the favourites to qualify for the tournament in Germany. Romania picked up four points over the break while Switzerland picked up just the one after a thrilling 3-3 game vs Belarus, scoring two goals in two minutes to end Belarus’ hope’s of qualification through the automatic route. Switzerland were due to play Israel but that game was postponed for obvious reasons, due to the current situation in Israel. What will happen going forward concerning Israel’s games and potential qualification is at this point unknown.
GROUP J
Qualified: Portugal
Another win for Portugal saw them qualify and carry on their one hundred percent winning run in qualification, only France have equalled this. Two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and two assists from Bruno Fernandes helped Portugal achieve victory once again. Elsewhere in the group second place is looking like it’s heading to Slovakia, they sit five points above third place with two games to go, meaning a win in their next game or Luxembourg getting anything less than three points, would qualify them.
